I wrote this piece this morning, in dedication to a young poet whom I encountered in a Black Planet poetry group, The Artists Lounge. His name is ActivePoet. The more I thought about it, this is really a thought by which I wish to encourage all of us writers, artists, thinkers, and visionaries. But, again I must thank ActivePoet, whose youthful, vigorous rhymes and intense social pronouncements led me to think of this.
This is for us all.
STAY DOWN
If you never write another line
your mouth spit another rhyme
You've been down since the beginning of time
So, stay down, son... stay down
You can make all look
into an old and crusty book
whose knowledge you came and took
but only if you stay down, way down.
As the world's insanity rages,
spoon-feed the masses of all ages
with knowledge you took from those pages
by staying down ... you gotta stay down.
I heard you and I know it
Though young you're a wise poet.
Don't ever act like you don't know it
You have no choice... you must stay down.
Your heart will be broken and torn,
your pride and patience worn,
wishing you had never been born
chosen from birth to be down.
Here's what you better do.
Not asking, I'm telling you,
For the progress that WE must pursue
YOU were chosen to be down ... so stay down.
